Guardias Viejas is the Levante spot at the western end of El Ejido: a small gravel and sand beach next to the Guardias Viejas neighbourhood, in a bay that opens to the southeast, just after Punta de los Baños and its lighthouse. Kiters, windsurfers and foilers also know it as Culo Perro. You ride with Levante, which comes in side-onshore with some short chop near the shore. With Poniente the wind arrives side-offshore and is gusty due to the point: the water remains flat near the shore but the wind pushes you out to sea, so only for those with experience and safety gear. It is a good spot for kitesurf, windsurf and wingfoil, and with little or no wind the sheltered sea of the bay also serves for SUP. Watch out for the short chop when entering and exiting, for swimmers in summer and for the lack of facilities: there are no beach bars or showers on the beach. The beaches of El Ejido are buoyed for swimming from 15 June to 15 September and riding is not allowed inside the buoys. Forecasts should be checked with ARPEGE, ECMWF and ICON.
