El Balneario is the urban end of Los Lances beach, just west of the breakwater connecting Tarifa with the Isla de las Palomas and a five-minute walk from the old town. It is a small spot, with sand between rocky outcrops, known worldwide for its big air sessions. With Levante, the east-northeast wind arrives accelerated by the Estrecho: very strong, gusty and offshore, pushing towards the open sea. For advanced level only, using small kites and always staying upwind of the island. With Poniente, it comes in side-onshore, more manageable, with waves and a shorebreak, and the drift carries you towards the breakwater and the rocks. Hazards to consider: rocks on the shore and a reef next to the breakwater, the Isla de las Palomas (military zone, surrounded by rocks), the Estrecho current and the ferry traffic entering and leaving the port south of the island. In summer, the urban beach has a buoyed swimming area and kite is practiced outside of it. Parking, showers, chiringuitos and accommodation are right on the beach. Forecasts are checked with ARPEGE, ECMWF and ICON.
